Justice for Providers and Consumers Impacted by the Change Healthcare Cyber Breach

Change Healthcare recently discovered a cyberattack that has put the data of approximately 100 million Americans at risk. It has also negatively affected most medical providers in the United States, preventing or delaying claims and payment processing and often preventing medical providers from receiving timely pre-authorizations for certain medical procedures. These harms have led to the closing of many medical practices and has likely forced thousands of medical providers to the brink of financial ruin.

The law firm of Stranch, Jennings & Garvey is leading the charge for justice in this cyberattack – especially for frontline medical providers who deserve compensation. We’ve filed the earliest and largest number of cases regarding this incident. To pursue your claim, call now or message us for a consultation.

The BlackCat Gang Attack on Change Healthcare

The ransomware group ALPHV, also known as Blackcat, claimed responsibility for the data breach. The cybercriminals allegedly used compromised credentials to gain access to a Change Healthcare Citrix portal on Feb. 12, 2024, and deployed ransomware while acquiring patient data on a massive scale. The breach was not discovered until Feb. 21, 2024. The group was able to access the information because it was not protected with multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Data acquired by Blackcat includes files containing protected health information (PHI) or personally identifiable information (PII) of possibly a substantial proportion of the American people.

UnitedHealth Group, which owns Change Healthcare, reportedly paid a $22 million ransom to Blackcat to protect patient data. However, patient data still appeared on the dark web. The data breach is expected to have an estimated cyber impact of approximately $870 million.
