President Biden Nominates Karla M. Campbell to U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals

May 24, 2024

Nashville, Tenn. — On Thursday, May 23, President Joe Biden announced the nomination of Karla M. Campbell of Stranch, Jennings & Garvey, PLLC (SJ&G), to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Campbell received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2008 and her B.A. with highest distinction from the University of Virginia in 2002. She joined SJ&G (formerly Branstetter, Stranch & Jennings) in 2009, becoming a partner in 2015 and of counsel in 2022.

“The team at Stranch, Jennings & Garvey is incredibly proud of Karla’s nomination to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals by President Biden,” says J. Gerard Stranch IV, founding and managing member of SJ&G. “There is no one more qualified or deserving of this federal judgeship.”

During her career, Campbell has advocated for employee rights with a wealth of experience in Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), labor law, appellate practice and civil litigation.

If confirmed, Campbell will fill the seat of Judge Jane Branstetter Stranch, who is stepping down from active service on the Cincinnati-based court. Campbell clerked for Branstetter Stranch from 2010 to 2011.

“During her 15 years with our firm, Karla has demonstrated her profound legal acumen, meticulous attention to detail and deep commitment to justice,” Stranch adds. “Her ability to navigate complex legal issues will be an asset to the court. We look forward to her speedy confirmation and the positive impact she will have on the bench for years to come.”

Also on May 23, President Biden nominated Justice Julia M. Lipez to the U.S. 1st Circuit Court of Appeals; Catherine Henry for the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Pennsylvania; and Mary Kay Lanthier for the U.S. District Court District of Vermont. This marks the 50th round of federal judiciary nominations announced by President Biden, according to a statement from the White House.

August 2024 Update

On Thursday, Aug. 1, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee advanced Campbell’s, Henry’s, Lanthier’s and Lipez’s nominations to a full U.S. Senate vote. Campbell passed the Democratic-led committee with an 11-10 vote.

“We are very pleased that Karla is now one step closer to taking a seat on the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals,” Stranch said. “We look forward to the vote by the full Senate after they return from their August recess in a few weeks.”
